AudioSoft ATC Communication Recording at Gloucestershire Airport

AudioSoft has been selected for the supply of an AudioPC–1018 digital recorder to the ATC tower at Gloucestershire Airport at Staverton, located close to Cheltenham. Replacing an old analog recorder the new digital system allows automated unattended recording of up to eighteen channels onto hard disk. The channels are split between Ground to Ground recording at 32Kbs and Ground to Air recording at 64Kbs in anticipation of amendments to forthcoming versions of CAP670. Archiving of recordings is carried out using DVD–RAM technology. The system is fully compliant with SRG standards and meets all ATC operating requirements of Gloucestershire Airport.

Gloucestershire Airport is typical of many smaller regional airports who are considering the replacement of older systems using VHS cassettes or reel to reel magnetic tapes with a solution which is both cost effective to purchase, and delivers robust performance over anticipated whole life operation. As well as cost, operators are increasingly looking towards other benefits such as high levels of confidence in reliability, and unattended recording without the need to constantly change tapes. Commenting on the new system Airport Engineer Keith Davies said “The AudioSoft ATC comms recording system is very easy to operate, not having to constantly change tapes is a bonus, as is the almost instantaneous access to recordings.” He further stated “AudioPC–1018 provides very high quality record and playback facilities and allows us to concentrate on other operational issues within the airfield, something we could not confidently say of the older system it replaced”.
