Major European air traffic recording project: CANAC, Belgocontrol

Consolidating recent successes within the dense airspace of the European lowlands at Eurocontrol and LVNL, AudioSoft are to supply voice recording to Belgocontrol’s CANAC (Computer Assisted National Air Traffic Control Center).

Centered upon Steenokkerzeel, Brussels National Airport, and handling networked flight safety information between international and regional airports within Belgium and Luxembourg, the Belgocontrol CANAC system is undergoing its first major modernization since its inception in 1993. Airspace coverage extends from runway to 24,500 feet (8000m), above which EuroControl, Maastricht (another AudioSoft client) assumes responsibility for safe transit.

The AudioSoft recording systems, using highly dependable commercial - off the shelf (COTS) RAID 1 technology, will be installed at five Belgocontrol locations – Brussels National Airport (EBBR), Antwerp/Deurne (EBAW), Charleroi/Gosselies (EBCI), Liège/Bierset (EBLG), Ostend (EBOS), and will replace analog tape systems. As a basic statutory element with CANAC’s voice communication system, it will archive recordings over a RAID1 network for the ICAO’s mandatory 30 days (and potentially longer), whilst providing a full range of analysis, alarm monitoring, and networked playback facilities.
