Safe and Sound - Dubai airport recording system announced

With safety and security paramount amongst the daily concerns of modern air traffic control operators, the ability to monitor and replay communications across the diverse range of airport systems is a distinct advantage. This provides relatively simple means to improve both internal and external security, shorten response times, assist in staff training and therefore reinforce passenger confidence.

As providers and integrators of digital recording to the Dubai Department of Civil Aviation, AudioSoft come from a background of development and worldwide supply of digital recording systems to air traffic control, police, maritime, corporate and government security agencies. They also have systems in operation at other Emirate cities of Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, as well as the Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt.

Surveillance communications systems typically present within the airport environment include VHF radio (ground to air / air to ground), PABX (public telephone booking and enquiries lines), radar (serial) data, ATIS (meteorological information), Airwave radio monitoring (encrypted handheld radios used by police and security agencies), and VoIP (networked voice communications over the internet).

From this range of inputs, the Dubai system records 40 synchronized and individually assignable audio and radar channels and can playback up to of these four simultaneously. This allows a clear analytic picture to be built up of any possible chain of events.

With AudioPC software loaded onto a system of standard PC hardware, DCA’s Operations Dept are able to remotely capture all of these types of voice and data communication and lock the signals into a tamperproof format which cannot be subsequently altered. In order to do this, AudioSoft uses its proven compression technologies which enable digital and analog sources to be recorded, logged, monitored, then safely stored for future replay and analysis. Also, the system includes GPS receivers and a synchronized master clock which enables the most accurate real-time monitoring of events currently available, providing a consistent timeline on which to re-construct events for training and analysis purposes.

In line with the rapid expansion of air traffic in Dubai and the UAE, AudioSoft’s modular construction of its recording hardware built from standard PC components is fully able to meet future expansion requirements. AudioSoft’s systems in place with EuroControl, Maastricht (Holland) and NATS (UK) - the most dense air traffic area in the world, demonstrate that scale in the order of 500+ channels is reliable achievable. …Something that will prove crucial if the United Arab Emirate’s air traffic volumes increase as predicted.
